ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture in Chinese medicine has a history that dates back at least 2,500 years.  Today, there are many styles of acupuncture practiced in the United States, all of which have a different history.  Acupuncture needles are thin and treatments should feel comfortable.  It can be used as a preventative therapy, supportive therapy, or to provide full recovery from an ailment.  Acupuncture treatments induce a parasympathetic response, allowing the client to rest, relax, and recover.  Dr. Tyler has training in various styles such as zang-fu, classical, sports, neuro-meridian, and scalp acupuncture.  If applicable, he also uses electric stimulation and moxibustion with acupuncture.

ORTHOPEDIC AND MUSCLE TESTING

Orthopedic and muscle testing are utilized to assist with the diagnostic process and reveal which muscle(s) and other tissues are involved with certain dysfunctions or pain.  Orthopedic tests are structural tests that help identify the specific nature of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.  Muscle testing focuses on the function of specific muscles and identify pain generating tissues.  Both types of exams can help direct diagnosis and treatment, and identify possible referrals.

CUPPING

Cupping is a relaxing treatment method used to alleviate muscle tension and pain.  Glass, ceramic, or plastic cups may be used.  A suction is created as the cup is placed onto the skin, which breaks up knotted tissue and stagnant blood and fluid to allow for new circulation.  Often, clients feel relief immediately after treatment.  Cupping is a wonderful treatment on its own, or after acupuncture.  Moving cupping is a technique in which the practitioner moves the cup along the muscle tissue much like a massage.  Still cupping is a technique in which a cup stays in one place.  Both methods are soothing and effective.

HERBAL MEDICINE

Herbal medicine has a long history of use in cultures around the world, and dating back around 5,000 years in China.  Some tried and true formulas have lasted through the centuries and are still used today.  Herbal remedies are modified for each client as necessary.  In some cases, herbal medicine may be stronger than acupuncture, but  utilized together, the two treatments can be very effective in addressing ailments.  Dr. Tyler utilizes herbs from both Western and Chinese apothecaries, and may prescribe herbs in the form of granules, capsules, raw form for tea, or topically for athletic injuries.  Herbal remedies are not prescribed for every client, but are recommended when appropriate.
